Special note: Results were collated prior to the Covid-19 outbreak and several weeks prior to the 2020 private sector roll out being postponed to April 2021.
Does this give a true snapshot as to how the market will adapt in April 2021? We think so.
In March 2020 over 30% of our Integro Accounting clients shared their views on the contractor market. This is our second survey. With results on par with last years survey, we are able to provide a detailed overview on how things have changed.
With the onus for determining a contracts IR35 status shifting from contractor to end client/recruiter in April 2021 there is naturally a slight pressure to ensure everyone is fully supported around IR35, especially the client. Key results showed:
- When asked about IR35, over 3/4 of clients are still willing to contract through their limited company, or are ‘undecided’. Many want to wait for the right contract in order to secure the best assignment for their skill set. Echoing the results from 2019, where contractors appeared to remain driven, despite the IR35 payroll roll out. Further details on IR35 can be found here: IR35 Jargon Buster.
- 6% increase in public sector contractors – a rise from 24% in 2019.
- 85% of clients actively chose contracting due to the ‘flexibility’ of contracting – 13% increase.
- “Treated with more respect from the end client” and “Seen and treated differently to permanent staff” – greater autonomy fast becoming a core reason for people shifting to consulting.
- Over 1/2 of clients continue to work in the most popular sector IT – on par with results from 2019.
- 83% of clients commanding rates between £300 – £799 – only a 2% drop.
- 56% of contractors impacted by IR35 roll out – 75% remain using their limited company or are ‘unsure’ at the moment.
